While there is still some debate as to the effectiveness of face masks in protecting the wearer, most experts agree that they can help protect other people, where social distancing is not possible.

If you’re going to wear one, do wear a ‘home made’ fabric face mask - thereby keeping supplies of medical grade masks available to frontline workers.

Here at Cockpit Arts it is now a requirement to wear a face mask in communal areas.

Karen’s take on the fabric face mask is pleated, colourful and comes in a wide range of sizes, from XS to XXL. Made from lightweight cotton for comfort and breathability in these summer months, each mask has a two-piece self-lining which allows for the option of inserting a filter. We provide HEPA changeable and re-usable filters with each mask.

We used Hepaflo filter bags normally used in ‘Henry’ vaccuum cleaners, which are made from 3 layers of spun polypropylene. These work great as they are slim. lightweight and extremely moisture-repellent.

Alternatively, the mask can be worn on its own (due to the design there are three layers of cotton), or if you prefer the idea of a disposable filter, you could use a folded paper towel or a coffee filter.

The masks are washable - simply add to your normal washing load after each wear (the filter isn’t washable, so remove that before washing).

Karen is now working on a second range of masks, watch this space for news on those!
